🏞 Taranaki Falls – Iconic Waterfall Loop

Distance: 6 km loop
Time: 2 hours

The Taranaki Falls Track is one of Tongariro National Park’s most iconic short walks, beginning right in Whakapapa Village. The well-formed track leads you through alpine tussock, past patches of beech forest and across small streams before bringing you to the spectacular 20-metre Taranaki Falls, where water tumbles over the edge of an ancient lava flow into a deep pool below.

This track can be walked as a loop — the upper track offers panoramic views of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe and the surrounding volcanic plateau, while the lower track winds through lush forest and across the Wairere Stream. Combined, they give a complete sense of the park’s contrasting landscapes in a short, rewarding walk.

🌋 Tama Lakes – Alpine Crater Lakes

Starting from Whakapapa Village, the track winds past Taranaki Falls before climbing steadily through tussock and alpine scrub. Along the way, you’ll be treated to incredible views of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe.

The lower lake sits in a broad basin, while the short but steep climb to the upper viewpoint reveals the striking Upper Tama Lake, a deep-blue crater lake set dramatically below the towering slopes of Ngauruhoe. This track offers a full-day adventure with less foot traffic than the Crossing but just as much volcanic drama.

One thing to always remember when walking in Tongariro National Park is that the weather can change quickly. Even on a sunny morning, conditions can shift to cold winds, rain, or even snow within hours — especially on the higher alpine tracks. Always check the DOC weather and track updates before setting out, and turn back if conditions start to worsen.

Make sure you’re wearing sturdy footwear, carry warm layers, and pack a windproof and waterproof jacket. Sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water are just as important, as the alpine sun can be deceptively strong. For longer hikes like Tama Lakes, bring snacks, a map, and extra clothing in case the day stretches longer than planned.
