🚶‍♀️ Walk around Lake Rotopounamu

One of the most rewarding things to do in Tūrangi is the peaceful bush walk around Lake Rotopounamu, a hidden gem tucked into the side of Mt Pihanga. The loop track circles the lake through lush native forest and opens onto small beaches where you can rest, picnic, or dip your toes in the clear water.

We do this walk at least once a week, and we still notice something new every time. Sometimes it’s a bird call, other times a change in the light through the trees, or even the way the lake shifts colour with the weather.

The full circuit takes about 90 minutes at an easy pace, so it’s ideal for families, casual walkers and anyone wanting a gentle nature escape.Since the track winds mostly through dense bush along the lakeside, it can feel surprisingly chilly even in summer. That’s why it pays to bring a jacket just in case.

However, you will also find multiple spots between Tūrangi and Taupō. They are perfect for cooling off and enjoying a picnic by the water.

On the western side, Pukawa offers a wide beach that suits all ages. There is plenty of space to swim, sunbathe, and picnic. Facilities include parking and toilets but there are no shops nearby, so remember to bring supplies. The drive over Waihi Hill adds a little time, yet the peaceful setting makes it well worth the effort.

Closer to town on the eastern side, the Waiotaka Scenic Reserve provides another family-friendly spot. Calm waters, good parking and bathroom facilities make it an easy choice for an afternoon dip or picnic.

After a day of ticking off your list of things to do in Tūrangi, nothing beats cooling off in Lake Taupō. Take a swim and soak up the relaxed holiday vibe on the lake’s southern shores.
