From Auckland through the Central North Island & West Coast
This itinerary follows a wide loop from Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland through some of the most diverse landscapes in the central North Island.
The journey moves first to the west coast and the surf town of Raglan, before continuing through farmland and limestone country toward Waitomo Caves. From there the road heads south along the rugged coastline to Taranaki, where the perfectly shaped peak of Mount Taranaki rises above the surrounding plains.
Turning inland again, the route follows the Whanganui River valley before climbing toward Ohakune and the mountains of Tongariro National Park. The journey then loops through Taupō, Rotorua and the rich farming country around Matamata before returning to Auckland.
This is a journey shaped by changing landscapes and cultures. You’ll pass from surf beaches to forested valleys, geothermal lakes to mountain roads, and through towns where local stories and Māori history remain part of everyday life.
The route is designed to move at a comfortable pace, allowing time for short walks, scenic stops and unplanned discoveries along the way.
