Wellington to Auckland – While this guide follows the journey from Wellington to Auckland, the route works just as well in reverse if you are travelling south.
This itinerary follows a scenic route from Te Whanganui-a-Tara – Wellington to Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland, travelling through some of the most character-filled regions of the lower North Island.
The journey begins in the harbour city of Wellington before crossing the rolling farmland of the Wairarapa, passing through towns such as Featherston, Martinborough, Greytown and Masterton. From there the road continues north through rural communities like Eketāhuna, Mangatainoka and Dannevirke before reaching the food and wine region of Hawke’s Bay.
Further north the journey moves toward the lake town of Taupō and the geothermal areas of Rotorua, before passing through Tīrau, Matamata – Hobbiton and the countryside of the Waikato on the final stretch back to Auckland.
Along the way you’ll encounter natural spring stops such as Te Waihou Blue Springs, lakefront towns, rural communities and places where travellers often decide to stay longer than planned.
The route is designed to move at a relaxed pace, allowing time for short walks, scenic stops and unplanned discoveries along the way.
