Coastlines, Lakes and Fiordland Journey
The journey can begin in Ōtautahi – Christchurch or Tāhuna – Queenstown, depending on where travellers arrive. From Christchurch the route heads north toward Hanmer Springs before crossing the Southern Alps through Lewis Pass, where mountain valleys and native forest lead to the rugged coastline of Te Tai Poutini – the West Coast.
Travelling south along the coast, the journey reveals dramatic landscapes shaped by rain, sea and time before crossing Haast Pass into the alpine lakes and valleys of Wānaka and Queenstown.
From Queenstown the route continues deeper into the south with a spectacular journey to Piopiotahi – Milford Sound, where towering cliffs, waterfalls and ancient fiords reveal the dramatic scale of Fiordland.
The journey then turns east through the southern regions of Murihiku – Southland and the Catlins, where wild coastline, windswept forests and remote beaches create a completely different landscape again.
Continuing north, the route passes through the historic cities and coastal towns of Ōtepoti – Dunedin and Oamaru before climbing back into the alpine landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin, where the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo sit beneath the peaks of Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.
The final stage of the journey leads to the harbour village of Akaroa on Banks Peninsula before returning to Christchurch, completing a loop that showcases the remarkable diversity of the South Island.
It’s a journey shaped by contrast and scale. Rugged coastlines, alpine lakes, quiet high-country towns and the deep wilderness of Fiordland combine to create one of the most varied road trips in Aotearoa – New Zealand.
