Beginning in Christchurch, the journey travels south along the Canterbury coast before turning inland toward the alpine landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin. Along the way, small towns, braided rivers and coastal viewpoints offer gentle moments before the scenery begins to rise toward the mountains.
As the route continues through Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, the landscape opens into one of Aotearoa – New Zealand’s most spectacular regions of dark sky country. Turquoise glacial lakes sit beneath towering peaks, while the vast night skies reveal some of the clearest stargazing in the Southern Hemisphere.
From here the journey continues through the alpine lakes and valleys of Wānaka and Arrowtown, before arriving in Queenstown, where mountains meet the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
During your stay in Queenstown, the journey extends deeper into the south with a spectacular day trip to Piopiotahi – Milford Sound. The drive into Fiordland reveals towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls and one of the most dramatic landscapes in the country before returning to Queenstown for the evening.
This is a journey shaped by light and shadow. By day, snow-dusted mountains and glacial lakes dominate the horizon. By night, the stars emerge across landscapes where darkness is still protected and silence settles across the valleys.
It’s a journey that rewards slowing down — waiting for dusk, stepping outside after dark and letting the landscape reveal itself long after the sun has set.
