Alpine Coast and Mountain Loop Journey
Beginning in Christchurch, the journey heads north toward the alpine village of Hanmer Springs before crossing the Southern Alps through Lewis Pass, where native forest, mountain valleys and winding rivers mark the gateway to the wild West Coast.
From here the route turns south along Te Tai Poutini – the West Coast, where rugged shoreline, rainforest and historic towns such as Punakaiki, Greymouth and Hokitika reveal a landscape shaped by rain, sea and time.
The journey continues through one of the South Island’s most spectacular drives, crossing Haast Pass into the lakes and valleys of Wānaka and the Cardrona Valley, before reaching the mountain setting of Queenstown.
From Queenstown the route begins its return inland through the vast alpine landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin, passing the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo beneath the towering peaks of Aoraki Mount Cook National Park before completing the loop back in Christchurch.
This is a journey of constant change. Rainforest and coastline give way to alpine passes, glacial lakes and high country plains, creating a road trip that captures the dramatic contrasts of the South Island.
It’s a loop designed for travellers who enjoy taking the scenic route — where every mountain pass, lake and valley reveals another layer of Aotearoa – New Zealand’s remarkable landscapes.
