The Full South Island Scenic Journey
The journey can begin in Ōtautahi – Christchurch or Tāhuna – Queenstown, depending on where travellers arrive. From Christchurch the route heads north along the dramatic coastline to Kaikōura, where mountains rise sharply from the Pacific Ocean and marine wildlife thrives offshore.
Continuing north, the journey moves through the vineyards and sheltered waterways of Marlborough, exploring the calm bays and forested inlets of the Marlborough Sounds before travelling west toward the golden beaches of Abel Tasman National Park.
From here the route turns south along the rugged coastline of Te Tai Poutini – the West Coast, where rainforest, river valleys and remote shoreline create one of the most dramatic landscapes in the country. Crossing Haast Pass, the road emerges into the alpine lakes and mountain scenery of Wānaka and Queenstown.
A journey to Piopiotahi – Milford Sound reveals the towering cliffs and waterfalls of Fiordland before the route continues south through Murihiku – Southland to the coastal communities of Invercargill and Bluff.
Turning north again, the road follows the wild coastline of the Catlins before reaching the historic cities of Ōtepoti – Dunedin and Oamaru.
The final stage of the journey climbs back into the alpine landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin, where the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo sit beneath the peaks of Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, before completing the loop back in Christchurch.
It’s a journey that reveals the South Island in full — from coastal wildlife and sheltered bays to rainforest valleys, alpine lakes and the deep wilderness of Fiordland.
