If you’ve started researching the Cook Islands, chances are you’ve seen photos of Aitutaki Lagoon.
And yes, the water really does look like that.
Aitutaki is a short flight from Rarotonga, and while you can stay on the island for several days, many visitors experience it as a day trip from Rarotonga.
But it’s not a cheap day out, which brings us to the obvious question:
Is a day trip enough or should you stay a few nights?
- We’ve visited Aitutaki ourselves, so we’ll look at what you can experience in a day, what you gain by staying longer, and help you decide which option might suit your Cook Islands holiday.
Is Aitutaki really worth the extra cost?
- We think it can be but there are a few things worth knowing before you decide.

Getting to Aitutaki

Aitutaki is reached by a short domestic flight from Rarotonga, and even the flight gives you your first glimpse of just how incredible the lagoon is.
If you’re short on time, Air Rarotonga offers a full-day trip from Rarotonga, combining the flights with an island tour and lagoon cruise.
Alternatively, you can book your flights separately and stay on Aitutaki for a few nights, which gives you much more time to explore the main island and enjoy it once the day-trippers have gone.
If your Cook Islands holiday is long enough and the budget allows, we’d choose to stay a few nights. But if you’ve only got a week in Rarotonga, the day trip gives you a great way to experience Aitutaki without having to move accommodation.
The Aitutaki Lagoon

This is the main reason most people come to Aitutaki.
The huge lagoon is scattered with small islands known as motu, surrounded by shallow turquoise water, coral and white sand. A lagoon cruise is one of the best ways to experience it, with stops along the way to:
- Swim in that ridiculously blue water
- Snorkel amongst tropical fish and marine life
- Visit some of the motu scattered around the lagoon
- Spend time on the beaches rather than just seeing them from the boat
And this is one place where we’d say don’t forget your snorkel gear.
Being able to jump straight off the boat and into the lagoon is a big part of the Aitutaki experience.
One Foot Island

One of the best-known stops in Aitutaki Lagoon is One Foot Island, or Tapuaetai.
With its white sand and clear shallow water, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most photographed places in the Cook Islands. Most lagoon cruises give you time here to:
- Swim and snorkel in the lagoon
- Walk along the beach and explore the motu
- Get the famous One Foot Island passport stamp if it’s available during your visit
If you’d like the passport stamp as a souvenir, take your passport with you.
But don’t make the mistake of thinking One Foot Island is the whole reason for going.
For us, the lagoon itself is the real highlight.
There’s More to Aitutaki Than the Lagoon

If you’re staying longer than a day, you’ll have time to see another side of Aitutaki.
The main island is small and easy to explore, giving you time to:
- Hire a scooter, bicycle or car and explore at your own pace
- Visit Ootu and Amuri beaches and some of the quieter parts of the island
- Walk up Maunga Pu, Aitutaki’s highest point, for views across the island and lagoon
And really, that’s one of the biggest advantages of staying a few nights:
You don’t have to fit Aitutaki into a timetable.
Food on Aitutaki
Aitutaki is a great place to eat local and enjoy fresh island food. Keep an eye out for:
- Fresh fish caught in the surrounding waters
- Ika mata — fresh raw fish with citrus and coconut cream
- Rukau — taro leaves usually cooked with coconut cream
- Umu-cooked food and other traditional Cook Islands dishes
Our tip is simple: ask what’s good that day and try something local.
Sometimes that’s where the best meals come from.
Day Trip or Stay a Few Nights?

This is probably the biggest decision.
Choose the day trip if:
- Your time in the Cook Islands is limited.
- You’re based in Rarotonga and don’t want to move accommodation.
- Seeing the lagoon and One Foot Island is your main priority.
- You’re happy with a full, organised day.
Stay a few nights if:
- You have 10 days or more in the Cook Islands.
- You prefer travelling at a slower pace.
- You want time to explore the main island as well as the lagoon.
- You’d like to experience Aitutaki without watching the clock.
Neither option is wrong.
The day trip lets you experience one of the most beautiful parts of the Cook Islands in a single day, while staying longer gives you time to discover that Aitutaki isn’t just its lagoon.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
A little preparation goes a long way on Aitutaki:
- Sun protection: Take sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water. That tropical sun can be strong.
- Mosquito repellent: Definitely worth packing, particularly during the warmer, wetter months.
- Carry some cash: Banking and ATM options are more limited than Rarotonga, and smaller businesses may prefer cash.
- Sundays are quieter: Sunday is traditionally a day of church and rest, so some businesses and services may be limited.
And one last tip from us: don’t pack your day so tightly that you forget where you are.
Aitutaki is somewhere worth slowing down for.
So, Is Aitutaki Worth It?

For us, yes.
If you’re already travelling all the way to the Cook Islands, Aitutaki gives you something quite different from Rarotonga.
If the cost of the day trip would stretch your holiday budget too far, however, don’t feel as though you haven’t properly experienced the Cook Islands without it. Rarotonga has plenty to offer on its own.
But if you have the time and the money to include Aitutaki?
We’d make room for it.
