Explore Aotearoa – New Zealand

The Land of the Long White Cloud

Ngauruhoe and Tongariro

Aotearoa – New Zealand is made up of three islands: the two main islands — Te Ika-a-Māui (the North Island) and Te Waipounamu (the South Island), and the smaller but no less special Rakiura – Stewart Island. To make things easier to navigate, we’ve grouped our posts by island, with each one branching into regional guides, travel tips, and personal stories.

As native Māori of Aotearoa, we’ve journeyed across every corner of our beautiful country. We’ve felt the magic of this land again and again. Every trip reminds us just how lucky we are to call Aotearoa home.

Through our travels, we hope to share that magic with you — to inspire you to come, explore, and experience the real Aotearoa for yourself.

🗺️ Using Te Reo Māori Place Names

We use many original place names in te reo Māori alongside their English versions — a simple way to honour the land, its people, and their stories. You’ll see this throughout Aotearoa – New Zealand too, with bilingual signage across the country.

Want to get a head start before your visit? Our Mastering Māori Pronunciation guide is an easy, friendly way to learn how to say place names with confidence — and deepen your connection to the journey.
