🚐 Freedom & Self‑Contained Sites

Hipapatua (Reid’s Farm) Recreational Reserve

  • Type: Freedom camping | Cost: Free
  • Facilities: Toilets, river access, picnic tables
  • Why it’s great: Riverside setting minutes from Taupō town — popular for swimming, kayaking, and sunsets .
  • Tips: Bring drinking water (must boil) and note that fires are not allowed. The ground can get soggy after rain, so park with care and check the weather forecast. There are two Portaloo toilets on-site which can get a bit messy, but just a short 50m walk to the river you’ll find clean toilets, a dishwashing station, and beautiful river views. You can only park riverside between 7am and 6pm — after that, you’re allowed to move into Hipapatua Reserve proper. We found it safe and reasonably quiet, just be mindful of soft ground during wet weather.

Kuratau Recreation Reserve (near Turangi)

  • Type: Self-contained freedom camping | Cost: Free
  • Facilities: Toilets, riverside access, picnic area
  • Why it’s great: Quiet, scenic spot south of Taupō on the lake’s edge — great for fishing and kayaking .
  • Tips: Stay up to 3 nights. No showers or power.

DOC Campgrounds

⚠️ Access & Comfort Notes

DOC campsites around the lake often involve rough gravel roads, limited facilities, and sometimes seasonal closures—so they’re not the easiest to reach. Whakaipō Bay is amongst the most accessible options but still require good off-road comfort.

📌 Always check the DOC website for road conditions, booking requirements, fire regulations, and updated access info before you go.

Whakaipō Bay Campsite – Lake Taupō Shores

  • Why it’s great: A peaceful lakeside spot surrounded by farmland and native bush, with walking/biking trails nearby
