We headed into Cornwall Park and Maungakiekie – One Tree Hill for something easy and grounding. It’s one of those places right in the middle of the city, but once you’re in there, it doesn’t feel like Auckland at all.
Maungakiekie is another significant maunga in Tāmaki Makaurau, with strong cultural and historical importance. The name “One Tree Hill” comes from a time when a single tree stood at the summit. That tree is no longer there, and in its place now stands an obelisk memorial. The maunga itself remains a place of respect, history, and wide open space for people to connect with.
What We Did
We parked near the café and wandered through the lower park before looping around the side of the maunga to start the climb. It’s a nice gradual lead-in rather than heading straight up.
You’ll cross cattle stops along the way, this is still working farmland with sheep and cattle grazing, which adds to the feel of the place.
The climb up is gradual, similar to other maunga. Nothing too intense, just a steady walk to the top. If you’re short on time, you can drive closer to the summit carpark, but we were happy taking it slow.
We finished back down near the café, perfect excuse for an ice cream and a wander around the smaller historic buildings nearby.

What Stood Out
It’s the space. Wide open, green, and calm.
Even with people around, it never felt crowded. There’s room to spread out, find a quiet spot, and just sit for a bit.
The views are similar to Maungawhau – Mt Eden, just from a different angle. You’re still getting that full outlook over the city, but with more of a relaxed, park-like feel around you.
Tohu Tip & Local Knowledge
- Weekdays are best — weekends get busy, especially if there’s an event at the ASB Showgrounds nearby

- You can drive part way up — good option if time or mobility is limited
- Cattle stops and livestock — this is working farmland, so take your time and be mindful
- Stick to marked paths — protects both the land and the animals
- Great picnic spot — bring food or grab something from the café and find a quiet patch
- Close to the hospital — surprisingly peaceful spot if you need a breather or reset
Worth Adding to Your Trip
If you’re short on time and deciding between the maunga, we’d still recommend Maungawhau – Mt Eden first. But if you want somewhere more spacious and relaxed, this is a great option to slow things down.
If you’re travelling through Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland by campervan, this is an easy stop to add in for a slower-paced day.
Our Tohu Travellers itineraries and destination guides help you map these kinds of stops into your journey without overcomplicating things, so you can just get out there and enjoy it.
