Evening Cruising on the Chao Phraya River – A Different Way to See Bangkok

We try to experience as much as we can when travelling, especially things that are affordable and offer a different perspective. Evening river cruises in Bangkok were something we’d seen countless times — boats gliding along the Chao Phraya River, packed with people, lights glowing, music drifting across the water.

To be honest, the sheer number of people on board always put us off.

But after paying closer attention, we noticed a pattern. The earlier cruises, especially the 5:00 pm departures, were never as busy as the later 7:30 pm sailings. Much like our experience at Baiyoke Sky Tower, the early time slot also offered something special — daylight, sunset and night views all in one experience.

That was enough to convince us to give it a go.

Choosing the Right Cruise & Departure Point

Asiatique

We chose a cruise departing from Asiatique The Riverfront, arriving about an hour early to explore before boarding.

Asiatique is undeniably touristy — but it’s also extremely well set out. There’s a great mix of shops, food stalls and entertainment, and it feels lively rather than overwhelming. If you’re into themed attractions, the Jurassic World Experience is also located here and was clearly very popular.

We booked our cruise through Trip.com, which made the process easy. There are optional add-ons like the Ferris wheel or a cabaret show — we chose to include the cabaret as part of our evening.

When the ticket booth opened, we simply exchanged our online booking for boarding tickets and waited nearby.

Boarding & First Impressions

Boarding began around 4:45 pm, with the boat departing at 5:00 pm. The process was smooth and well organised, with staff helping everyone find their assigned seats.

There are two levels on the boat, with buffet stations on both. Ice cream is located on the lower level due to freezer placement, but otherwise food access is easy regardless of where you’re seated.

On a hot day, sitting on the upper deck could easily feel uncomfortable, but we were lucky — once the boat started moving, a gentle breeze made it surprisingly pleasant.

Dinner, Drinks & Atmosphere

The buffet is already set up when you board, so you can start straight away.

This isn’t a made-to-order dining experience — the food is prepared in advance and served buffet-style — but to be fair, it was actually very nice. There was a good variety of dishes, along with desserts and fresh fruit.

Soft drinks and beer are unlimited. The beer is served from large glass urns (the kind usually reserved for juice), and while it was a little warm, it was still cold enough to be refreshing — and on a warm Bangkok evening, that was all that mattered.

What really lifted the experience was the entertainment. On our cruise, two women performed live vocals and did an incredible job of engaging the crowd. Before long, people were up dancing, laughing and genuinely enjoying themselves. Watching the atmosphere shift from polite dining to shared joy was one of the highlights of the evening.

Sunset on the Chao Phraya River

As the sun began to set, the whole experience softened. Seeing Bangkok transition from daylight to dusk from the river is something special.

Due to the tide being high, our cruise didn’t pass by the temples along the river — but that didn’t detract from the experience. The city lights, bridges, waterfront buildings and general movement along the river more than made up for it.

It felt calm, unhurried and immersive.

After the Cruise – Cabaret Show at Asiatique

After disembarking, we headed straight to the cabaret show included in our booking.

The show runs for about an hour and features lip-synced performances to a wide variety of songs. The costumes are stunning, the choreography is tight and polished, and while the format is quite structured, it was still great to experience.

We were glad we went — even just to say we’d seen it.

Is an Evening River Cruise in Bangkok Worth It

For us, yes — especially if you choose the earlier departure.

The experience offered:

  • A relaxed way to see the city
  • Food and drinks included (Beer is included, while all other alcoholic drinks are available at an additional cost.
  • Live entertainment
  • Sunset and night views
  • A lively but not overwhelming atmosphere

If you’re expecting gourmet dining or a quiet, intimate experience, this might not be for you. But if you’re happy to slow down, enjoy the river, listen to music and see Bangkok from a different angle, it’s a genuinely pleasant way to spend an evening. At around $74 NZD per person, including both the cruise and the show, we felt it was good value. Without the show, prices start from around $48 NZD per person.
