Deep in the heart of Te Tai Poutini – the West Coast, Franz Josef Glacier is one of Aotearoa – New Zealand’s most dramatic and awe-inspiring landscapes. Few places on earth bring such striking contrasts together — ancient ice flowing down from the Southern Alps, stopping just short of lush rainforest and wild coastline. This rare meeting of environments makes Franz Josef a destination of both raw natural power and unforgettable adventure, a place where every turn offers a new perspective on the beauty of the land.
🌊 Why Visit Franz Josef

Franz Josef is more than just a glacier — it’s an experience of contrasts. Walk through lush rainforest, hear the roar of rushing rivers and suddenly find yourself gazing up at ancient ice. The most unforgettable way to see it is from above. We were fortunate to experience a heli flight onto the glacier, with 2.5 clear days out of our 4-day stay. I cannot recommend it highly enough — soaring above the mountains and then stepping out onto the blue ice, surrounded by towering peaks, was absolutely breathtaking. It’s one of those rare travel moments that stays with you forever. Even now, when Franz Josef is mentioned, I can close my eyes and see it so clearly. It is truly Mother Nature at her best — pure perfection.
📍 Where It Is & A Little History

The glacier sits within Westland Tai Poutini National Park, around 2.5 hours south of Hokitika. Named after the Austrian emperor in 1865 by explorer Julius Haast, Franz Josef is known to Māori as Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere — the tears of Hine Hukatere. According to legend, a mountaineer named Hine lost her lover in an avalanche; her tears of grief froze to form the glacier we see today.
🥾 Good to Know Before You Go

- Glacier Access: The terminal face walk is currently limited due to safety and ice retreat, so most visitors join heli-hikes or scenic flights.
- Best Season: Franz Josef can be visited year-round, but winter often brings clearer skies and spectacular snow views.
- Facilities: The village has cafés, restaurants, lodges and hot pools — making it a comfortable stop despite its remote location.
- Village Vibe: Small but lively, Franz Josef has everything you need for a night or two, from pizza spots to cosy pubs.

🌟 Things to Do in Franz Josef

- Glacier Hot Pools – Relax in rainforest-surrounded pools, open day and night.

📸 Tips for Visiting

- Book flights and guided hikes early — weather changes fast on the Coast and tours sell out quickly.
- Always have a backup plan (rainforest walks, kayaking, hot pools) in case the weather grounds helicopters.
- Pack a raincoat — this is one of New Zealand’s wettest places and showers roll in often.
- Other options – If time allows, there are longer heli-hike tours (2–3 hours) that take you deeper onto the glacier. I opted out of the extended hike because of my anxiety, but I still joined the flight and stepped onto the ice. Even that shorter experience was absolutely breathtaking — a moment we’ll never forget.
✨ Final Thought
Few places in the world let you stand among rainforest, rivers and glaciers in the same day. Franz Josef Glacier is both humbling and inspiring — a reminder of nature’s power, beauty and fragility. Whether you’re stepping onto the ice itself, soaking in hot pools or wandering quiet trails, Franz Josef is a West Coast experience that will stay with you forever.
