Spa Thermal Park to Huka Falls Walk

A scenic riverside track that follows the Waikato River from Spa Thermal Park to the mighty Huka Falls. Along the way you’ll pass bubbling hot streams, native bush, and lookout points — finishing with Taupō’s most famous waterfall. About 3 km one way; allow 1.5 hours return.
Length/Time: 3 km one way; allow 1.5 hours return.
Difficulty: Easy (Grade 2), suitable for most fitness levels.
Start Point: Spa Thermal Park car park, off Country Road (5 minutes from Taupō town).
Highlights: Riverside views, bubbling hot streams, native bush, kayakers on the river and the roar of Huka Falls at the finish.
Local Tip: Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the busiest crowds at the falls.
Mt Tauhara

A favourite with locals, this track climbs through native bush to the summit of Mt Tauhara, an extinct volcano. It’s only about 2.8 km one way but don’t be fooled by the distance — the climb is steady and it’s up, up, up all the way. The reward is worth it though with sweeping views over Lake Taupō, Mt Tongariro and even Mt Ruapehu on a clear day. Allow 2–3 hours return and come prepared to take it slow if you’re not used to steep tracks.

Top Biking Trails in Taupō
Great Lake Pathway (Lion’s Walk)
This flat, family-friendly ride hugs the lakefront, with constant views across Lake Taupō to the mountains of Tongariro National Park. Perfect for a relaxed cycle or walk; ride as much or as little as you like.
Huka Trails

The Huka Trails are some of the most popular rides around Taupō, winding alongside the Waikato River and linking to the mighty Huka Falls. The tracks are mostly Grade 2–3, making them accessible for beginners through to intermediate riders. You’ll ride past forest, river cliffs and geothermal features, with plenty of spots to stop for photos. Short loops make it family-friendly but you can also connect the trails for a longer adventure.
Length/Time: Around 14 km if you ride Spa Road → Huka Falls → Aratiatia → back the opposite side; allow 2–3 hours depending on pace.
Difficulty: Grade 2–3 (easy–intermediate). Mostly flowing pumice tracks with a few short climbs.
Start Point: Spa Thermal Park car park (off Spa Road) or various access points along the river.
Highlights: Ride alongside the Waikato River with forested stretches, cliffside lookouts, geothermal steam vents, and the roar of Huka Falls. Extend further to Aratiatia Rapids to watch the dam release.
Local Tip: Take water and snacks — it’s a decent ride if you loop the full circuit. The pumice surface drains well, so it’s usually rideable year-round.
Craters Mountain Bike Park

For those after more of a challenge, Craters Mountain Bike Park delivers. Managed by Bike Taupō, the park features over 50 km of trails crisscrossing pine forest and volcanic terrain. There’s something for everyone here — from flowy Grade 2 family rides to technical downhill runs and jumps that will test experienced riders. It’s a paid-entry park, but the trail network is constantly maintained and offers some of the best riding in the central North Island.
Length/Time: Over 50 km of purpose-built trails; you can spend a quick hour or a full day here.
Difficulty: Wide range (Grade 2–5). Easier flow trails like Tourist Trap and Coaster for beginners, plus technical downhill and jump lines (Buzzard, Cole’s Killer) for advanced riders.
Start Point: Main access off Karapiti Road, 10 minutes north of Taupō. Parking and passes available at the trail hub.
Highlights: Pine and eucalyptus forest, volcanic pumice soil that drains fast, constantly maintained network by Bike Taupō.
Local Tip: A Bike Taupō pass is required (day or annual). Rentals, maps and good coffee are available at the nearby FourB hub. Great choice if you want to test your skills or try a bit of everything.
