Lord of the Rings North Island Journey
This New Zealand itinerary is designed for travellers who want to experience the landscapes that helped bring Middle-earth to life.
Beginning in Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland, the journey travels south through the green farmland of Waikato before reaching the limestone valleys of Piopio and the volcanic plateau of Tongariro National Park.
Along the way the landscapes change dramatically. Gentle farmland becomes dramatic volcanic terrain. Limestone valleys give way to wide river gorges and remote forested hills.
The route follows many of the real locations used throughout The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Hobbiton, Trollshaw Forest, Mordor and Rivendell all appear along the journey.
The final stretch leads south through the Whanganui region and along the Kāpiti Coast before arriving in Te Whanganui-a-Tara – Wellington, where much of the trilogy was brought to life behind the scenes.
This journey connects the landscapes of the North Island with the creative heart of the films.
It’s not simply about visiting filming locations.
It’s about travelling through the places that inspired them.
