Downloadable 7-day travel itinerary designed for travellers wanting to explore the landscapes that helped bring Middle-earth to life across the North Island of Aotearoa – New Zealand.
Beginning in Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland, this journey travels south through the green farmland of the Waikato, where the Hobbiton Movie Set sits among the rolling hills of Matamata.
The route continues through the limestone landscapes of Waitomo and Piopio, home to filming locations used for the Trollshaw Forest scenes in The Hobbit.
From there the journey climbs onto the volcanic plateau of Tongariro National Park, where the dramatic terrain of Mount Ngauruhoe became the dark land of Mordor.
Travelling south through the river valleys and countryside of the Whanganui region, the route eventually reaches Te Whanganui-a-Tara – Wellington, where many of the films were produced and where visitors can explore Wētā Workshop and other creative locations connected to the trilogy.
This itinerary links several of the most recognisable filming locations in the North Island while travelling through landscapes that already feel cinematic long before the cameras arrived.
