Riding the BTS one day in Bangkok, an advert caught our attention — “Scan & Pay Like a Local.” It was for TAGTHAI, and it instantly made us curious. After spending time in places like China where QR payments are everywhere, the idea of a simple cashless system for visitors felt appealing.
So we decided to dig deeper and see what it was all about.

Our First Impressions
At first glance, we assumed TAGTHAI worked like most mobile payment systems, linking directly to your home country bank card or credit card. That’s not how it works.
TAGTHAI’s Easy Pay system uses a Pay & Tour prepaid card, which is issued and loaded through selected Kasikornbank foreign exchange booths. One key thing to know is that the card can only be loaded using foreign currency, not Thai baht.
We realised this after looking into it more closely. At the time, we already had Thai baht and went to a participating exchange booth to ask about loading the card. We were told it wasn’t possible unless we exchanged our baht back into foreign currency first — which didn’t make sense for us on this trip.
Because of that, we decided to skip it this time and keep it in mind for a future visit.

How TAGTHAI Easy Pay Is Designed to Work
While we didn’t end up using TAGTHAI Easy Pay this time, we do understand how it’s intended to be used.
- Travellers take foreign currency from their home country to a participating Kasikornbank foreign exchange booth
- The currency is exchanged at their rate and loaded onto a Pay & Tour prepaid card
- The card is then added to the TAGTHAI app, enabling QR payments at supported merchants
Once set up, payments are simple — scan and pay, similar to how locals use QR systems across Thailand.
Helpful Features We Like
There are several features that make the system appealing:
- Transaction history in the app, showing where and how much you’ve spent
- Easy day-to-day tracking without guessing or keeping receipts
- Helpful for travellers who like to stay on top of their budget
One particularly reassuring detail we discovered later is the guaranteed buyback.
- Any remaining balance on the card can be refunded at the same exchange rate
- This removes concerns about currency fluctuations
- Makes the system feel far more traveller-friendly if you don’t want leftover funds at the end of your trip
Important to Know
TAGTHAI Easy Pay is not app-only.
- You must have a physical Pay & Tour prepaid card
- The card holds your balance and is issued at selected exchange booths
- The TAGTHAI app is used to link the card, make payments and track spending
In short, the app manages the payments, but the physical card is essential.
Extra Flexibility
Another bonus is the ability to withdraw cash from ATMs using the card without an ATM withdrawal fee. This adds flexibility if you need physical cash alongside QR payments.

Where We See the Value
The biggest appeal of TAGTHAI Easy Pay is convenience.
- No need to carry large amounts of cash
- No coins building up in your bag
- Familiar QR-style payments
- Easy for everyday spending
In many ways, it mirrors how payment systems work in other parts of Asia, and for travellers who prefer cashless experiences, that’s a big plus.
That said, we’d still always recommend carrying some cash. Thailand isn’t fully cashless, and smaller vendors still rely on it.
You can find a full list of participating Kasikornbank foreign exchange booth locations directly on the TAGTHAI website.
Head to www.tagthai.com, then navigate to the Easy Pay section, where all supported locations are clearly listed so you can check what’s closest to where you’re staying.
A Few Things to Know Before You Decide
There are a couple of practical points worth keeping in mind:
- Foreign currency only: The Pay & Tour prepaid card can only be loaded using foreign currency, not Thai baht. This system works best if you plan ahead. If you’ve already exchanged most of your money into baht, switching back just to use the card doesn’t make much sense.
- Exchange rates: Participating foreign exchange booths are often located inside major shopping malls, where rates can be slightly less competitive than independent exchange counters elsewhere in the city.
In this case, you’re trading the very best exchange rate for convenience and ease of use — which may be a worthwhile trade-off for some travellers.
Would We Use TAGTHAI Easy Pay?
Yes — but only if planned from the start.
If we arrived in Bangkok with foreign cash and were planning to exchange money anyway, we’d consider loading a moderate amount onto the card for everyday spending, while keeping some cash on hand as backup.
Used intentionally, it’s a clever and well-thought-out system. Used halfway through a trip, it’s far less practical.
Final Thoughts
TAGTHAI Easy Pay isn’t a must-have, but it’s a useful option to know about — especially if you prefer cashless travel and like the idea of paying the way locals do.
For us, timing was everything. Now that we understand how it works, it’s something we’d consider using on a future visit — just with a bit more planning upfront.
Sometimes, travelling like a local starts not with where you go, but with how you pay.
