There’s something quietly magical about hot water meeting the crisp New Zealand air—and Taupō is rich with those experiences. From natural rock pools along Otumuheke Stream to luxurious silica terraces and playful resort springs, this is where warmth, nature, and mana come together. Below are a few of our favourite places to soak, relax and truly connect with Aotearoa’s geothermal heart.
1. Otumuheke Stream (Spa Thermal Park)

This free, naturally heated stream has long been a Māori bathing and gathering spot, now upgraded with changing rooms, lockers, and river-edge platforms. You’ll soak in warm, mineral-rich pools right beside the crystal-clear flow of the Waikato River — warm on one side, cool on the other. It is possible to walk from Taupō town, but it’s a fair distance, so most visitors use the parking at Spa Thermal Park on Country Road, off Spa Road. From the car park it’s an easy 500-metre walk one way to reach the pools.
- Opening Hours: Open daily, 7:00am – 8:00pm
- Cost: Free entry
- Features: Riverside hot pools, new platforms and seating, changing rooms, lockers, toilets, short walk from car park, safe family-friendly access.
💡 Tip: Best visited in the morning or late afternoon for a quieter soak.
2. Taupō DeBretts Hot Springs & Spa

A family favourite, DeBretts blends fun and relaxation with indoor/outdoor mineral pools, waterslides, a chilled playground and full spa treatments in one welcoming setting. Whether you’re chasing thrills or simply a warm soak, there’s something for all ages.
- Opening Hours: 8:30am – 8:30pm (last entry 8:00pm)
- Cost: Adults $24 | Children $15 | Family passes available; extra for private pools and spa treatments
- Features: Outdoor mineral pools, indoor pools, waterslides, hydrotherapy pool, toddler play area, day spa, café, accommodation on site.
💡 Tip: Great option for families or when you want both fun and relaxation in one place
3. Wairakei Terraces & Thermal Health Spa

Set in native bush, this is a holistic wellness retreat rather than a theme park. The silica-rich pools cascade like natural terraces with warm to hot temperatures and even a soothing waterfall. Spa treatments and a serene setting complete the picture—perfect for slowing the world down.
- Opening Hours: 10:00am – 8:00pm (daily)
- Cost: Adults $25 | Concessions available | No entry for under-14s
- Features: Four silica-rich pools ranging from warm to hot, a waterfall pool, native bush surrounds, quiet adults-only setting, spa treatments.
💡 Tip: Best suited for adults seeking a tranquil, healing experience.
4. Hot Water Spots Around Lake Taupō

Geothermal activity isn’t limited to one place — there are several hot spots along the lake’s foreshore where warm water bubbles up through the sand and lakebed. The most popular is often called Hot Water Beach, where you can sit in shallow pools and feel the heat rising through the ground.
- Opening Hours: Natural access; best enjoyed at low lake levels or calm conditions.
Cost: Free entry
Features: Family-friendly, sandy areas with geothermal warmth, lake swimming nearby.
💡 Tip: The temperature can vary depending on geothermal activity and lake conditions, so always test the water carefully before settling in
