We’ve come through Thames more times than we can count, and it’s always been our go-to place to reset before heading further into the Coromandel. If you’re travelling this way, this is where you get sorted.
Thames sits at the start of the Coromandel Peninsula if you’re heading clockwise. It’s one of those towns that just works, everything you need in one place without feeling busy or rushed.
What We Did
Coming in from the south, you’ll cross the bridge into Kōpū, marked by carved pou at the entrance. From there, it’s a left turn toward Thames.
We usually make a quick stop at Bob’s Gas if our bottles are low, easily one of the cheapest fills around and always good service.
Just past the airstrip, there’s a large freedom camping area. It’s quiet, spacious and usually full which is always a good sign.
Further along, you’ll pass the BP with a dump station and potable water before heading into town.
Once in Thames, we head straight for Pak’nSave. It’s one of the better stops for campervans with plenty of space to park and a good place to stock up properly before continuing on.
We’ve also stayed at the freedom camping spots near town. They’re handy and close to everything, but can be a bit noisy — still worth it if you want easy access to shops and food.

What Stood Out
Thames is practical, but in a good way.
You’ve got everything within reach, groceries, fuel, laundry, cafés and a solid information centre. It’s easy to park up, walk around and get things done without stress.
It’s also the last proper hub before the coastal drive, so it makes sense to take your time here.
Thames is also the gateway to some of the best hikes in the North Island, including the Kauaeranga Valley Pinnacles Track, making it a solid base before heading out on the trails.
