Distance: 44.9 km loop
Time: 3–4 days
The Tongariro Northern Circuit is one of Aotearoa’s great walks and a multi-day adventure that offers a truly immersive alpine experience. Circling the dramatic volcanic landscapes of Tongariro National Park, this 3–4 day journey takes you across lava fields, past emerald lakes, over crater ridges and through beech forest valleys. Starting and finishing in Whakapapa Village, it’s the perfect loop to showcase the park’s diversity.
Along the way you’ll climb past the Mangatepopo Valley, traverse the dramatic Red Crater and gaze down at the brilliant Emerald Lakes. The track winds on through the stark beauty of the Oturere Valley, skirts the edges of old lava flows and passes the Tama Lakes — offering side trips for those with the energy. Each day reveals a new facet of the park’s unique volcanic environment.
This circuit is not just a longer version of the Alpine Crossing. It’s a backcountry tramp that requires preparation, booking huts in advance during the Great Walks season and being ready for sudden changes in weather. Outside of the season, conditions can be harsh with snow, ice, and shorter daylight hours — only experienced trampers with alpine gear should attempt it.

🛖 Huts & Further Information
There are three huts along the Tongariro Northern Circuit — Mangatepopo, Oturere, and Waihohonu — each with nearby campsites. These must be booked in advance during the Great Walks season (late October to April) as spaces fill quickly. Outside of the season, huts are unserviced and conditions are more challenging, requiring alpine gear and experience.
For up-to-date track conditions, hut bookings and detailed planning resources, see the official DOC page.

⚠️ Safety & Preparation
The weather in Tongariro can change rapidly. A blue-sky morning may shift to howling winds, heavy rain or snow by the afternoon. Always check the forecast and track conditions before setting out and be prepared to turn back if things deteriorate.
You’ll need to be self-sufficient: carrying a 40–60L pack with a sleeping bag, extra layers, waterproof gear, food, water, map, compass and a first aid kit. The track includes exposed ridges, loose scree descents and river valleys, so a good level of fitness and sturdy footwear are essential.
Outside of the Great Walks season, huts are unserviced and the route can be snow-covered and icy, requiring alpine equipment and advanced navigation skills. Only attempt the circuit in winter if you have the experience and gear.
Respect the sacred nature of these volcanic peaks. Ngauruhoe and Tongariro are tapu (sacred) to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, so climbing them is not appropriate. Stay on the marked tracks and tread carefully in this living cultural landscape.
