Getting to and Around Cinque Terre – Trains, Cars and Travel Tips

Getting to and around Cinque Terre is surprisingly straightforward once you understand how the local transport system works. Located along Italy’s beautiful Ligurian coastline, the five villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are connected by a railway line, scenic walking trails and seasonal ferry services. While the villages may appear close together on a map, the steep coastal terrain and narrow roads mean travelling between them requires a little planning. Fortunately, with regular train services and several transport options available, exploring this spectacular region without a car is both convenient and enjoyable.

What Is the Best Way to Get Around Cinque Terre?

Is it better to explore Cinque Terre by train, on foot or by ferry? For most visitors, the train is by far the easiest and most convenient option, with short journeys connecting all five villages and nearby towns such as La Spezia and Levanto. Walking the coastal trails offers a completely different experience, taking you through vineyards and hillsides with spectacular views of the coastline, while seasonal ferries allow you to admire the colourful villages from the sea. Cars are restricted from the historic village centres, with parking generally located outside the main pedestrian areas. Combining train travel with walking and an occasional ferry trip is a wonderful way to experience everything Cinque Terre has to offer.

Our Experience Travelling to Cinque Terre

Both of our visits to Cinque Terre began with a train journey from Rome, but our experiences getting around the region couldn’t have been more different. During our first visit in August, the height of the summer season, the trains and stations were so crowded that travelling between villages became uncomfortable. We decided against purchasing a train pass, preferring to spend our time exploring on foot rather than dealing with the crowds. Returning at the end of March was a completely different experience, with some train journeys shared by only a handful of other passengers. This time, we purchased a three-day Cinque Terre Train Card, using it for our hiking adventures and day trips to Levanto and Riomaggiore. Experiencing both the busiest and quieter seasons gave us a much better understanding of how to make the most of travelling around Cinque Terre.

How to Get to Cinque Terre by Train

Travelling to Cinque Terre by train is one of the easiest ways to reach this beautiful part of Italy. The five villages sit along the railway line between La Spezia and Levanto, with connections available from major cities including Rome, Florence, Pisa, Milan and Genoa. Depending on where you’re travelling from, you may need to change trains at La Spezia Centrale or Levanto before continuing to your chosen village.

Popular train routes to Cinque Terre include:

  • Rome to Cinque Terre: Approximately 4–5 hours, depending on the service and connections.
  • Florence to Cinque Terre: Around 2.5–3.5 hours, usually with a change at Pisa or La Spezia.
  • Pisa to Cinque Terre: Approximately 1–1.5 hours, depending on your destination and connections.
  • Milan to Cinque Terre: Around 3–4 hours, depending on the train service.
  • Genoa to Cinque Terre: Approximately 1–2 hours, depending on your destination and train connections.

Our Journey from Rome to Vernazza

Both times we visited Cinque Terre, we travelled by train from Rome. On our second visit, we booked economical second-class seats and found the journey comfortable and enjoyable, taking around four hours to reach La Spezia.

Our train arrived late into La Spezia, causing us to miss our connecting service to Vernazza. Fortunately, a quick visit to the information desk resolved everything, and our tickets were reissued without any fuss. Before long, we were back on our way.

Good to know: Check your train number, platform and carriage number carefully before boarding. Carriage numbers are displayed on the outside of the train, and allowing extra time for connections can make travelling much less stressful. If your train is delayed and you miss a connection, speak with railway staff about your ticket options before purchasing another one.

Travelling Between the Five Villages of Cinque Terre

Travelling between the five villages of Cinque Terre is incredibly easy thanks to the Cinque Terre Express, a regional train service connecting Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The railway runs through a series of tunnels along the coastline, with most journeys between neighbouring villages taking just a few minutes. During the main tourist season, trains generally run several times an hour, making it convenient to explore multiple villages in one day.

The five villages are connected in this order, travelling from north to south:

  • Monterosso: The northernmost village, known for its beaches and waterfront.
  • Vernazza: A picturesque harbour village surrounded by colourful buildings and steep hillsides.
  • Corniglia: The only village perched high above the sea, requiring a climb or shuttle bus ride from the railway station.
  • Manarola: Famous for its colourful houses overlooking the rocky coastline.
  • Riomaggiore: The southernmost village, with narrow streets leading down towards its small harbour.

What to know about travelling by train:

  • Journey times: Most trips between neighbouring villages take approximately 2–5 minutes.
  • Train frequency: Services are more frequent during the main tourist season, with reduced schedules during quieter months.
  • Tickets: Purchase individual train tickets or use a Cinque Terre Treno MS Card for unlimited eligible journeys during its validity.
  • Train stations: All five villages have railway stations, although some require a walk to reach the main village areas.
  • Timetables: Check the latest schedules, particularly if travelling early in the morning or late in the evening.

Good to know: Keep your belongings secure when travelling on crowded trains, particularly during peak season. Pickpockets can take advantage of busy platforms and packed carriages, so keep bags zipped and valuables close. We witnessed two separate pickpocketing incidents during our August visit, and fortunately, both offenders were caught. Also, remember to check the departure boards, as not every regional train stops at all five villages.

Understanding the Cinque Terre Cards

If you’re planning to explore several villages or hike the coastal trails, purchasing a Cinque Terre Card can be a convenient and cost-effective option. There are two main types of cards, each offering different benefits depending on whether you plan to travel by train, explore on foot or combine both. Understanding the difference will help you choose the best option for your visit.

Cinque Terre Trekking Card

The Cinque Terre Trekking Card is designed for visitors planning to explore the national park’s walking trails without relying heavily on trains.

What’s included:

  • Access to the chargeable coastal hiking trails between Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia.
  • Use of designated national park shuttle buses.
  • Access to certain public facilities and other park services.
  • Single-day and multi-day options, subject to availability.

This card is ideal if you’re staying in one of the villages and intend to spend most of your time hiking rather than travelling by train.

Cinque Terre Treno MS Card

The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card combines train travel with access to the chargeable hiking trails, making it a popular choice for visitors wanting to explore several villages.

What’s included:

  • Unlimited eligible regional train journeys between La Spezia, the five Cinque Terre villages and Levanto during the card’s validity.
  • Access to the chargeable coastal hiking trails.
  • Use of designated national park shuttle buses.
  • One-day and multi-day options, with prices varying by season.

Which Card Did We Choose?

During our March visit, we purchased a three-day Cinque Terre Treno MS Card, which suited our plans perfectly. We used it on our hiking day, travelling between the villages to access the trails, then enjoyed separate day trips to Levanto and Riomaggiore. Having the flexibility to hop on and off trains without purchasing individual tickets made exploring much easier.

Where to Buy Cinque Terre Cards

Cards can generally be purchased at participating railway stations, national park information centres and online.

A few things to remember:

  • Prices vary depending on the season and type of card.
  • Compare the cost of a pass with individual train tickets if you’re only making one or two journeys.
  • Cards are personal and non-transferable.
  • Check the validity period and any identification requirements before travelling.
  • Some hiking trails may be free outside the paid-access season, while others have separate booking requirements.

For the latest prices, card options and conditions, visit the official Cinque Terre National Park website.

Our tip: Plan which villages you want to visit before purchasing a card. If you’re travelling between several villages over consecutive days, a multi-day pass may offer better value. However, if you’re staying in one village and exploring mostly on foot, individual tickets or a Trekking Card may be all you need.

Can You Drive to Cinque Terre?

While it is possible to reach Cinque Terre by car, driving between the five villages is not the most practical way to explore the region. The roads are narrow, winding and often steep, with limited parking and restricted vehicle access in the historic village centres. Although the coastal scenery is beautiful, travelling by road can take considerably longer than the short train journeys connecting the villages.

Where to park when visiting Cinque Terre:

  • La Spezia: One of the most convenient places to leave your vehicle, with parking options near the railway station and regular trains into Cinque Terre.
  • Levanto: Another excellent option, particularly if you’re approaching from the north, with parking facilities and easy train connections.
  • Monterosso: Parking is available near the village, although spaces are limited and can be expensive during peak season.
  • Riomaggiore: A parking facility is located above the village, but spaces are limited and the walk into the centre involves steep streets.
  • Vernazza, Corniglia and Manarola: Vehicle access and parking are particularly limited, making these villages better suited to visitors arriving by train.

Our recommendation: If you’re travelling through Italy with a rental or lease car, consider leaving it in La Spezia or Levanto and exploring Cinque Terre by train. This allows you to enjoy the villages without worrying about parking restrictions, narrow roads or navigating unfamiliar streets.

Good to know: If you’ve booked accommodation within one of the villages, check parking arrangements with your host before arriving. Many properties are located in pedestrian-only areas, and reaching your accommodation may involve walking uphill or carrying luggage up several flights of steps.

Our Practical Tips for Travelling Around Cinque Terre

Travelling around Cinque Terre is relatively straightforward, but a little preparation can save you time, money and unnecessary frustration. Having visited twice, we’ve picked up a few useful tips, particularly when it comes to navigating train stations, managing luggage and reaching accommodation tucked away in the hillside villages.

Train Travel Tips for Cinque Terre

  • Travel light if possible: Many village streets are steep, with cobblestones and numerous steps. Carrying heavy suitcases can quickly become exhausting, especially if your accommodation is several floors above street level.
  • Check your carriage number: On longer train journeys, reserved seats are assigned to specific carriages. We learned this the hard way when we boarded carriage one instead of carriage eight and had to make our way through the train with our luggage!
  • Allow time for connections: Trains can occasionally run late, so avoid booking tight connections where possible. If you miss a connecting service because of a delay, speak with railway staff about your ticket options.
  • Check whether tickets need validating: Paper tickets and digital tickets can have different validation or check-in requirements. Always follow the instructions for your particular ticket before boarding.

Planning Your Visits to the Cinque Terre Villages

  • Plan your train pass carefully: Consider how many villages you intend to visit and whether a Cinque Terre Card offers better value than purchasing individual tickets.
  • Be prepared for stairs: Corniglia is particularly challenging because the village sits high above its railway station. A shuttle bus is available, but check its operating times before relying on it.
  • Check your accommodation location: A property described as being close to the station may still involve a steep climb or several flights of stairs. Read the directions carefully and ask your host about luggage access.
  • Keep an eye on the last train: Services become less frequent in the evening, particularly outside the main tourist season, so check the timetable before staying late in another village.

What We Learned About Accommodation in Vernazza

One thing we certainly underestimated was the number of steps involved in reaching our accommodation in Vernazza. Our host had provided excellent directions, but after climbing the steep village streets with our luggage, we discovered another three flights of stairs inside the building! By the time we reached our apartment, we were absolutely exhausted.

Our advice is to plan the essentials but leave room for flexibility. Once you’ve worked out the train system and where you’re staying, getting around Cinque Terre becomes much easier, leaving you more time to enjoy the villages, coastal scenery and everything that makes this region so memorable.

Final Thoughts on Getting to and Around Cinque Terre

Getting to and around Cinque Terre is relatively simple once you understand the transport options available. A little forward planning, particularly with train tickets, accommodation locations and seasonal crowds, can make your visit far more enjoyable.

Having experienced the region during both peak season and the quieter months, we’d certainly recommend allowing enough time to explore beyond a quick day trip. Each village has its own charm, and the freedom to wander, discover hidden corners and enjoy the spectacular coastline at your own pace is what makes Cinque Terre so memorable.
