Hiking the Cinque Terre is one of the most rewarding ways to explore this beautiful stretch of Italy’s Ligurian coastline. The walking trails wind their way between colourful seaside villages, through terraced vineyards, olive groves, natural bush and rugged coastal hillsides, offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. Located within the Cinque Terre National Park, these historic pathways were once used by locals travelling between villages and tending their land. Today, they offer visitors an opportunity to experience the region beyond its busy streets and waterfronts, with a variety of trails ranging from relatively gentle walks to more challenging climbs.
Is Hiking the Cinque Terre Worth It?

Absolutely! Walking the trails gives you a completely different perspective of the Cinque Terre, with breathtaking coastal scenery, peaceful stretches of countryside and incredible views of the villages from above. However, not every trail is an easy stroll. Some involve steep climbs, uneven steps and narrow pathways, so choosing a walk that suits your fitness level is important. It is also essential to check current trail conditions before setting out, as sections can close due to landslides, maintenance or adverse weather.
Our Experience Hiking the Cinque Terre

During our stay in Vernazza, we decided to explore two of the most popular coastal trails, Vernazza to Monterosso and Corniglia to Vernazza. Originally, we planned to complete them over two days, but an unfavourable weather forecast encouraged us to tackle both in one. What followed was a memorable day of stunning views, challenging climbs, plenty of steps and a few unexpected moments along the way. Although we were exhausted by the end, the experience gave us an even greater appreciation for the natural beauty of the Cinque Terre.

Hiking from Vernazza to Monterosso

The coastal trail from Vernazza to Monterosso is one of the most scenic walks in the Cinque Terre National Park. Part of the famous Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), the pathway winds through terraced vineyards, olive groves and rugged hillsides, offering spectacular views of Vernazza’s colourful harbour and the coastline stretching towards Monterosso.
Trail Information
- Distance: Approximately 3.5 km
- Walking time: Around 2 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
- Terrain: Steep climbs, uneven steps and narrow pathways
- Our recommended direction: Vernazza to Monterosso
We set off from Vernazza with our packed lunch, ready for our first hike of the day. One question often asked is which direction is better to walk? Having completed the trail, we would definitely recommend starting in Vernazza. Although the climb out of the village is fairly long, we found it more gradual than the steep ascent we would have faced coming from Monterosso. Looking back at those steps as we descended towards Monterosso, we were certainly glad we’d chosen our direction!
The walk was a wonderful mixture of challenging climbs, peaceful stretches of countryside and breathtaking coastal scenery. There were plenty of reasons to stop and admire the views, and despite the occasional steep section, every step was worthwhile.
Arriving in Monterosso, we treated ourselves to a refreshing drink and enjoyed our packed lunch before deciding what to do next. With the weather forecast looking less promising for the following day, our original plans were about to change.
Hiking from Corniglia to Vernazza

The coastal trail from Corniglia to Vernazza is another beautiful section of the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), winding through terraced vineyards, olive groves and lush Mediterranean vegetation. With sweeping views of the coastline and the colourful village of Vernazza appearing as you approach, this walk offers some wonderful photography opportunities. Although slightly less challenging than the Vernazza to Monterosso trail, there are still plenty of steps and uneven sections to navigate.
Trail Information
- Distance: Approximately 4 km
- Walking time: Around 1.5 to 2 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Terrain: Stone steps, uneven pathways and some steep sections
- Our recommended direction: Either direction, although we walked from Corniglia to Vernazza
After enjoying our lunch in Monterosso, we checked the weather forecast and decided to complete our second hike that afternoon rather than risk poor weather the following day. We caught the train to Corniglia, where getting from the station to the trailhead felt like a hike in itself! With Corniglia perched high above the sea, there were plenty of steps before we even began the coastal walk.
The trail was beautiful, but after already completing one hike, our legs were certainly feeling the effort. At just 5 ft 4 in, I found some of those stone steps enormous, although the stunning surroundings made the challenge worthwhile.
Our biggest mistake was not refilling our water bottles before leaving Corniglia. We had just one and a half drink bottles of water between us, and as the walk progressed, I became increasingly thirsty and anxious about how far we still had to go. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, we came across a small vendor selling drinks. He had sold out of most options, but thankfully still had water and pomegranate juice. We quickly drank two bottles of juice and replenished our water supply.
By the time we arrived back in Vernazza, we were exhausted but incredibly proud of ourselves. Two coastal hikes in one day was quite an achievement, and after all those steps, an early night was definitely on the cards. One lesson we certainly took away from the experience was to never underestimate how much water you might need, even on a relatively short hike.
Other Hiking Trails in the Cinque Terre

While the coastal trails between Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia are among the most popular, the Cinque Terre has an extensive network of walking paths that take you beyond the five villages. Some follow the coastline, while others climb higher into the hills, passing through vineyards, olive groves, woodland and small hillside settlements. These alternative routes can be a wonderful way to escape the busiest areas and discover a quieter side of the region.
Other hiking trails worth exploring include:
- Via dell’Amore (Path of Love): A short, scenic coastal walkway connecting Riomaggiore and Manarola. Known for its dramatic sea views, this is one of the gentler walks in the region, although access is controlled and advance booking may be required.
- Manarola to Corniglia via Volastra: A beautiful hillside alternative that climbs above the coastline and passes through terraced vineyards, offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea.
- Monterosso to Levanto: A more challenging coastal hike through Mediterranean vegetation and wooded hillsides, with sweeping views along the Ligurian coast.
- Sanctuary Trails: A network of historic paths leading from the villages to religious sanctuaries tucked into the surrounding hills, offering a mixture of culture, countryside and panoramic scenery.
Important: Not all Cinque Terre hiking trails are open year-round. Landslides, heavy rainfall and maintenance can result in temporary or extended closures, so always check the latest trail conditions before planning your walk. Some routes also require a hiking pass or have specific access restrictions.
Do You Need a Cinque Terre Hiking Pass?

Yes, a Cinque Terre Trekking Card is required to walk the popular coastal trails between Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia during the paid-access season. The money collected helps maintain the pathways, protect the surrounding landscape and support the Cinque Terre National Park.
There are two main types of Cinque Terre Cards:
- Cinque Terre Trekking Card: Provides access to the chargeable coastal hiking trails, making it ideal if you plan to explore on foot.
- Cinque Terre Treno MS Card: Combines access to the chargeable hiking trails with unlimited regional train travel between the villages, La Spezia and Levanto on eligible services.
Cards can be purchased online, at participating train stations, tourist information centres and designated trail entry points. Prices vary depending on the season, and multi-day options are available.
Good to know: Not every hiking trail requires a pass, and some coastal paths are free to access outside the paid season. Always check current prices, trail closures and access requirements before setting out.
How Difficult Is Hiking the Cinque Terre?

Hiking the Cinque Terre can be as relaxed or challenging as you choose, depending on which trails you take. While some routes offer relatively gentle walking, others involve steep climbs, uneven stone steps, narrow pathways and significant changes in elevation. You don’t need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the popular coastal trails, but a reasonable level of fitness, suitable footwear and a little preparation will certainly make the experience more enjoyable.
What to expect on the hiking trails:
- Steep climbs and descents: Some sections involve long stretches of steps, which can be tiring, particularly in warm weather.
- Uneven terrain: Expect rocky pathways, loose stones and irregular steps rather than smooth walking tracks.
- Narrow pathways: Certain sections have limited room for passing other hikers, so take your time.
- Limited shade: Although parts of the trails pass through vegetation and wooded areas, other sections are exposed to the sun.
- Different fitness levels: Allow extra time if you prefer a slower pace or enjoy stopping regularly for photographs.
From our experience, the Vernazza to Monterosso trail was the more challenging of the two, particularly because of the steep terrain. Corniglia to Vernazza felt slightly easier, although tackling both hikes in one day certainly tested our legs!
One thing we quickly learned was that distance doesn’t always reflect difficulty. A four-kilometre walk might sound relatively easy, but add steep stone steps, warm weather and uneven ground, and it becomes quite a different experience. The good news is that you can take your time, enjoy the scenery and stop whenever you need a break.
Our Practical Tips for Hiking the Cinque Terre

A little preparation can make a big difference when hiking the Cinque Terre. Although the coastal trails aren’t particularly long, the steep climbs, uneven terrain and warm Mediterranean weather can make them more demanding than expected. Having completed two hikes in one day, we picked up a few useful lessons along the way, including one we certainly won’t forget!
Our top tips for hiking the Cinque Terre:
- Carry plenty of water: Don’t underestimate how much you’ll need, especially in warmer weather. We learned this the hard way after leaving Corniglia with just one litre between us!
- Wear proper walking shoes: Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential for navigating uneven stone steps, rocky sections and steep descents.
- Start early: Setting off in the morning helps you avoid the hottest part of the day and some of the crowds along the popular trails.
- Pack snacks or lunch: There are limited places to purchase food along the trails, so carrying something to eat is a good idea.
- Check trail conditions: Always confirm which paths are open before setting out, particularly after heavy rain or during periods of maintenance.
- Protect yourself from the sun: Bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, as some sections have very little shade.
- Allow plenty of time: Don’t rush to complete the walk. Some of the best moments come from stopping to admire the coastline, take photographs or simply catch your breath.
- Know your limits: Choose trails that suit your fitness level, and remember that you can always explore the villages by train if you’ve had enough walking for the day.
Our biggest piece of advice is to enjoy the journey rather than focus on the destination. The Cinque Terre hiking trails offer some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Italy, and taking your time allows you to appreciate the vineyards, hillside villages and spectacular Mediterranean views that make this region so special.
Best Time to Hike the Cinque Terre

The best time to hike the Cinque Terre is generally during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October), when temperatures are more comfortable for walking and the trails are often less crowded than during the peak summer months. However, the weather can be unpredictable, particularly in early spring, so allowing some flexibility in your itinerary is a good idea.
What to expect throughout the seasons:
- Spring (March to May): Cooler walking temperatures, green hillsides and fewer crowds, although rain can affect hiking plans and trail conditions.
- Summer (June to August): Long, sunny days, but high temperatures and busy trails can make hiking more challenging. Starting early is particularly important.
- Autumn (September to October): Generally pleasant walking temperatures, with beautiful vineyard scenery, although rainfall can increase later in the season.
- Winter (November to February): Quieter villages and cooler conditions, but shorter daylight hours, wet weather and potential trail closures can limit hiking opportunities.
We’ve experienced the Cinque Terre in two very different seasons. Our first visit was in August, when the weather was hot, the villages were bustling with tourists and the coastal trail between Riomaggiore and Corniglia was closed. Returning at the end of March was a completely different experience. The weather was patchy, with rainy days forcing us to plan our hikes carefully, but the cooler temperatures made walking much more comfortable.
Having experienced both, we would choose the quieter months for hiking, even if it meant working around a few rainy days. The flexibility to adjust our plans was well worth it, and we found the trails much more enjoyable without the intense summer heat.
Good to know: Trail closures can happen at any time of year, so always check the latest conditions with the Cinque Terre National Park before setting out.
Final Thoughts on Hiking the Cinque Terre

Hiking the Cinque Terre was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our time in this beautiful part of Italy. While the colourful villages are wonderful to explore, walking the coastal trails gave us a completely different appreciation of the landscape, from the terraced vineyards and rugged hillsides to those incredible views looking down over the Mediterranean Sea.
For us, the experience was a reminder that some of the most memorable travel moments happen when you leave the busy streets behind and explore a destination on foot. The breathtaking views of the rugged coastline, rolling hills and colourful villages nestled between them will stay in our memories forever.
