Days 1–2: Rotorua – Geothermal Magic & Cultural Warmth

Mitai Village Cultural Show

Day 1: Welcome to Volcanic Country

  • 🚗 Drive from Auckland to Rotorua (approx. 3 hours)
  • 🌋 Visit Te Puia and witness the mighty Pōhutu Geyser
  • 🎭 Book a Māori hāngi dinner & cultural show (Mitai or Tamaki Village)

Don’t miss Rotorua’s bubbling thermal wonders — click here to explore tour options and soak in the experience.

🏕️ Where to Stay (Campervan Style)

  • 🏕️ Campervan Options:
    • Freedom Camp: Rotorua has limited freedom camping options, with just one located in the city itself. Most other spots are found on the outskirts, but they’re still beautiful places to spend the night. Here are a few worth checking out:
      • Hinemoa Street CCTV Campervan Park (in town) – A convenient option near the city centre. It’s safe, monitored by CCTV, and gets decent reviews, but it’s very popular so you’ll need to time your arrival well.
      • Boyes Beach Reserve, Lake Ōkareka – A peaceful lakefront spot about 15 minutes from town. It’s for self-contained vehicles only and has limited spaces, so get in early if you can.
      • Hamurana Reserve – Located right on the lake’s edge, this is a lovely scenic place to camp. Spaces are also limited, but it’s a favourite for its tranquil setting.
    • Paid Camp:
      • Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park – hot pools, powered sites, close to attractions.
      • Rotorua Family Holiday Park – powered sites, short drive to town. Quiet location

Day 2: Thermal Wonders

Wai o tapu
  • 🌈 Start early at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
  • 💆‍♀️ Relax with a mud treatment at Polynesian Spa
  • 🌲 Evening walk on the Redwoods Treewalk – magical at night!

Don’t miss Rotorua’s Polynesian spa experience — click here to explore options and soak in the experience.

💡 Local Tip: Wai-O-Tapu gets busy—beat the crowds by arriving just after it opens.

Days 3–4: Tongariro National Park – Lava Trails & Alpine Crossings

Tongariro National ParkTongariro Crossing and Mt Ngauruhoe in the background

I recommend doing this route — bypass Taupō on your way to Whakapapa Village in Tongariro National Park, so you can prepare for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing first. Once you’ve completed the hike, head to Taupō to relax and recover in the thermal pools or take a refreshing dip in the lake.

Taupō has plenty to offer and deserves a full day to explore, so saving it for after the Crossing lets you enjoy it properly.

This route can be adjusted depending on the weather, and if you’re tackling the Crossing, don’t forget to stock up on food and energy supplies beforehand.

Day 3: Journey to the Mountains

  • 🏞️ Drive Rotorua to Whakapapa Village (2.5 hours)
  • 🌊 Stop anywhere along Lake Taupō’s shore for a lakeside break
  • 🚶‍♀️ When you arrive in Whakapapa Village, take time to explore some shorter trails like Taranaki Falls or Silica Rapids to stretch your legs and get ready for the Tongariro Crossing. If the weather isn’t suitable for the full hike, the Tama Lakes Track is a fantastic alternative with stunning views and fewer crowds.

🏕️ Where to Stay (Campervan Style)

  • 🆓DOC Campground: Mangahuia DOC Campsite – 10 min to Whakapapa, scenic and quiet
  • 🏕️ Campground: Whakapapa Holiday Park – powered sites + shuttle to the Crossing

🍔 Local Bite: Grab a tasty snack from Ma and Mels food truck near the old Chateau pub.

Day 4: Tongariro Alpine Crossing

You’ve got two options for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing:

  • One-way shuttle – Drive to the end point of the track, take a shuttle to the start, and walk back to your vehicle. This option lets you head to Taupō the same day once you’ve finished the hike.
  • Return shuttle – Book a round-trip shuttle from your accommodation. After the Crossing, you can simply relax, rest, and make your way to Taupō the following day.

Tongariro Crossing details.

  • 🌄 Early shuttle to start the 19.4 km hike
  • 🥾 Marvel at the Emerald Lakes, Red Crater, and Mt. Ngauruhoe
  • 🛁 End with a soak at Tokaanu Thermal Pools (30 mins drive)

Considering a Guide for the Tongariro Crossing?
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing can absolutely be done without a guide—but for those who enjoy learning about the cultural and geological history of the area, or if the weather conditions are unpredictable and your time is limited, hiring a local guide is a smart choice. They’ll help keep you safe, provide rich context along the way, and make the most of your experience. Check out options here

Day 5: Taupō – Waterfalls, Adventures & Lakeside Bliss

Huka Falls
  • 💧 Start slow after the hike—head into Taupō
  • 🌊 Visit Huka Falls – thundering whitewater spectacle
  • ⛵ Book a Sail Barbary cruise or try Taupō Bungy
  • 🍽️ Dine at lakefront restaurants like The Bistro or Vine Eatery

🏕️ Where to Stay (Campervan Style)

  • 🆓 Freedom Camp: Hipapatua Reserve (Reid’s Farm) – riverside freedom spot. This is one of our favourite camping spots.
  • 🏕️ Campground: Taupō DeBretts Spa Resort – thermal pools, powered sites, and clean amenities
