Where to Stay in Croatia

Choosing where to stay in Croatia is about more than finding accommodation near the famous sights. Historic cities, coastal towns and small waterfront villages offer different ways to experience the country. You might want restaurants and attractions within walking distance, or somewhere peaceful to return to after a day exploring. Dubrovnik and Split deserve consideration, but smaller places can make rewarding bases too. This guide looks at the places we stayed, alongside other options to help you choose accommodation that suits your route, transport and preferred pace.

Should You Stay in Croatia’s Cities or Smaller Towns?

Would you prefer the convenience of a city or the quieter atmosphere of a smaller town? Cities can work well for shorter stays, sightseeing and access to transport. Smaller coastal places offer opportunities to settle into village life, although dining choices and public transport may be more limited. Staying outside a major city can also work beautifully when connections suit your plans, we stayed in Omiš and visited Split by local bus. The important thing is to check the practical details rather than choosing somewhere simply because it looks close on a map.

Our Experience Choosing Bases in Croatia

Komarna

We stayed in Dubrovnik, Komarna, Omiš and Zubovići on the island of Pag, gradually travelling north after beginning our Croatian journey in Dubrovnik. Having our Leased Car gave us flexibility, particularly for smaller villages and outings into the surrounding areas. Komarna was our base for four nights, while three nights in Omiš gave us time for the Cetina River and a day in Split. Zubovići provided a peaceful place to slow down towards the end of our trip. The smaller places became some of our favourite stays, with waterfront walks, local shops and welcoming hosts adding as much to our memories as the destinations we explored.

Dubrovnik — For Historic Streets and Exploring the Old Town

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik suits travellers who want historic surroundings, restaurants and time to explore beyond a quick sightseeing visit. Staying for a few nights lets you enjoy the Old Town at different times of day and venture into neighbourhoods beyond its walls. The main choice is whether you want to stay among the historic streets or somewhere outside the centre.

Staying Inside the Old Town

Accommodation within the walls puts you close to Dubrovnik’s main sights, with restaurants, cafés and shops nearby. It can be an appealing choice if you want to step outside and begin exploring immediately, particularly on a shorter visit.

Check access carefully before booking. The Old Town is pedestrianised, and some accommodation involves stairs and carrying luggage along stone streets. Ask about the route from your arrival point to the property. If you are bringing a car, confirm where you will park and how you will reach your accommodation from there.

Staying Outside the Old Town

Accommodation within the walls puts you close to Dubrovnik’s main sights, restaurants and cafés. It can suit a shorter visit when you want to step outside and begin exploring immediately.

The Old Town is pedestrianised, and reaching some properties involves stairs and carrying luggage along stone streets. Ask your host to explain the route from your arrival point, including any steps.

If you are bringing a car, arrange parking before arriving. Vehicle access around the historic centre is regulated. Confirm with your accommodation provider whether your route requires authorisation or registration of your number plate. Do not assume that a room booking alone includes vehicle access.

Who Dubrovnik Suits

Dubrovnik is a good option for travellers who want to spend time exploring the Old Town, walking the city walls or joining a Game of Thrones tour. We loved having time for those experiences alongside an evening meal and walks farther afield.

For a quieter stay, look closely at the property’s surroundings and recent reviews. The street, access and position of your accommodation can matter as much as its distance from the walls.

Before booking, check:

  • The actual walking route to the Old Town, including hills and steps.
  • Nearby bus stops if you prefer not to walk both ways.
  • Whether parking is private, reserved or simply available somewhere nearby.
  • How far you will need to carry your luggage.
  • Potential noise from restaurants, bars or busy streets.
  • Access to groceries if you plan to self-cater.

Komarna — For Quiet Waterfront Stays and Exploring by Car

Komarna is a small coastal village that suits travellers looking for a peaceful waterfront base rather than a busy resort. Houses and holiday apartments rise behind the shore, and the sea is a central part of the setting. It is somewhere to enjoy a morning walk, head out exploring and return for an unhurried evening beside the water.

What Staying in Komarna Was Like

We stayed for four nights in late May, when the village was particularly quiet. Some seasonal businesses were closed, and there were times when it felt almost deserted. We loved that peaceful atmosphere, although it would not suit someone wanting lots of restaurants or evening entertainment.

A small deli and grocery shop became a favourite stop, and we enjoyed taking our lunch down to the harbour. Walking along the waterfront and finding somewhere nearby to swim made it easy to enjoy time in the village without needing a full day of plans.

Using Komarna as a Base

Komarna worked well for us because we had a car. We explored nearby Klek, drove around the Opuzen area and visited the Pelješac Peninsula. We also made a longer day trip to Orebić, where we caught the ferry across to Korčula.

It is worth distinguishing nearby outings from full-day excursions. Having several nights gave us room to explore without trying to fit everything into one day. If you are travelling without a car, check specific transport connections before committing to a stay here.

Who Komarna Suits

Komarna could suit couples, independent travellers and anyone who enjoys small-village stays, swimming and exploring by road. An apartment with a kitchen would give you flexibility, especially when local dining choices are limited.

If you want a lively waterfront, extensive shopping or frequent public transport, another base may be more convenient. For us, the appeal was having somewhere quiet to return to after exploring.

Before booking, check:

  • Whether parking is included and how you access it.
  • The walking route to the waterfront, including any slopes or steps.
  • Which restaurants and grocery shops will be open during your stay.
  • Kitchen facilities if you plan to prepare meals.
  • Whether a balcony or terrace has the sea view shown in the listing.
  • Public transport options if you will not have a car.

Omiš — For Beaches, River Adventures and Day Trips to Split

Omiš combines a coastal town setting with access to the Cetina River, making it an appealing base for a varied stay. You can explore the old streets, spend time beside the sea or head inland on a river excursion. It also offers an alternative to staying in Split if you would prefer a smaller town and are happy to travel into the city.

What Staying in Omiš Was Like

We stayed for three nights and enjoyed the mix of activities available. Our visit included a boat trip to Radmanove Mlinice, a full day exploring Split and time finding another beach along the coast.

Omiš suited us because we could vary our days without changing accommodation. We had opportunities to explore on foot, use local transport and take the car out when we wanted to see more of the surrounding coastline.

Visiting Split from Omiš

We caught a local bus to Split, leaving our car behind for the day. The coastal views made the journey enjoyable, and we avoided having to find parking in the city.

This worked well for our visit, but check current timetables and the location of your accommodation before booking. Somewhere described as being in the wider Omiš area may involve an additional walk or journey to reach your bus stop. Allow flexibility for road traffic, particularly if you have a timed tour or other booking in Split.

Choosing Your Location

If you want to explore independently without using the car each day, prioritise accommodation within a comfortable walk of the town centre, your preferred beach and useful bus connections. Check the actual route, including road crossings, rather than relying only on the distance shown in a listing.

Accommodation farther along the coast may suit a beach-focused stay, but confirm how easily you can reach restaurants, groceries and the centre of Omiš.

Who Omiš Suits

Omiš could suit travellers who want beach time alongside sightseeing and outdoor activities. We found it a useful middle ground between a quiet village stay and a larger city base.

Before booking, check:

  • Walking access to the town centre and nearby beaches.
  • The location of bus stops and current services to Split.
  • Whether parking is included or needs to be arranged separately.
  • Possible noise from nearby roads, restaurants or bars.
  • The distance to boat-excursion departure points.
  • Whether the property is in Omiš itself or a neighbouring coastal settlement.

Zubovići on Pag — For a Peaceful Island Village Stay

Zubovići suited the part of our trip when we wanted to slow down, swim and enjoy being in one place. This small village on Pag offered a quieter setting, with nearby towns and coastal scenery to explore whenever we felt like heading out. It was a lovely contrast to our busier sightseeing stops.

What Staying in Zubovići Was Like

Our host helped make this stay memorable. Despite not speaking English, they invited us over for drinks and snacks. It was there that I tried an incredible homemade salami-style cured meat, one of my favourite food memories from Croatia.

That welcome added something personal to our stay. We enjoyed having somewhere peaceful to return to, with no pressure to fill every day. For travellers who like independent accommodation and a slower pace, a village stay can be a rewarding part of a longer journey.

Exploring the Surrounding Area

We drove to nearby Metajna for a coastal walk, finishing with time relaxing on its beach. We also visited Novalja for a day out and to stock up on groceries.

Having our car made these outings straightforward. If you are travelling without one, check how you will reach your accommodation, buy supplies and explore beyond the village. Don’t assume that transport arrangements will be as convenient as those in a larger town.

Choosing Your Accommodation

For a stay focused on relaxing, look closely at the features you will use each day. A comfortable outdoor seating area, kitchen and easy route to the water may matter more than a long list of facilities.

Check the exact location and access, especially if the listing shows sea views. Ask whether reaching the shore involves slopes, steps or a drive, and confirm which shops and restaurants will be open during your dates.

Who Zubovići Suits

Zubovići could suit travellers looking for a quiet village base on Pag, particularly those with a car who are happy to self-cater for some meals. Novalja may be a more convenient option if you want a wider choice of services close by.

Before booking, check:

  • Parking arrangements and access to the property.
  • The walking route to the nearest swimming spot.
  • Kitchen facilities and nearby grocery options.
  • Seasonal restaurant availability.
  • Whether a balcony or terrace is private or shared.
  • Transport connections if you will not have a car.

Other Places to Consider Staying in Croatia

Split

Our four bases suited our road trip, but your route and transport may lead you elsewhere. The following places offer alternatives for city stays, island exploring and visits to the national parks. We visited some as day trips, but did not stay overnight in them.

Split — For City Facilities and Island Connections

Split could suit travellers who want historic sights, restaurants, markets and ferry connections within reach of one base. We enjoyed visiting from Omiš, but staying in the city would give you more time to explore and enjoy its evenings.

Choose your location around what you will use most. Access to the historic centre may matter for sightseeing, while proximity to the port could be useful for an early departure. Check noise, luggage access and parking carefully, particularly around busy central streets.

Ston and Mali Ston — For History, Seafood and Exploring Pelješac

Ston and Mali Ston offer a smaller-town alternative to a city stay, with historic walls, seafood restaurants and access to the Pelješac Peninsula. We stopped while travelling north from Dubrovnik and were pleased we had allowed time to explore.

An overnight stay could suit travellers who want to enjoy the area without rushing onwards. Check which settlement your accommodation is in and whether you can comfortably walk to restaurants. A car would give you more flexibility for exploring farther along the peninsula.

Korčula — For an Island Stay Beyond a Day Trip

Korčula

We loved our day trip to Korčula, and staying overnight would allow more time to enjoy the old town and explore beyond it. Choose accommodation near Korčula Town if your priority is wandering historic streets and dining out on foot. Elsewhere on the island, your stay may focus more on village life, beaches or exploring by car.

Check your ferry’s arrival port before booking. Accommodation described as being on Korčula may be some distance from the town, so confirm how you will reach it and get around.

Skradin — For a Small-Town Base Near Krka

Skradin is an option for travellers who want a riverside town setting while visiting Krka National Park. It could suit an itinerary that combines a park visit with time for local restaurants and a waterfront stroll.

We did not visit Skradin, so it is an alternative to research around your own plans. Check the park’s seasonal boat services and walking access, along with parking and the distance between your accommodation and departure points.

Near Plitvice Lakes — For More Time at the National Park

Staying near Plitvice Lakes can make sense if you want to separate your park visit from a long driving day. We visited between Omiš and Pag, but an overnight stop would have given us more flexibility.

Look at accommodation around the entrance you intend to use, rather than choosing only by its distance from the park boundary. Confirm whether you need a car or transfer to reach the entrance, and check nearby meal options. A property described as being near Plitvice is not necessarily within walking distance.

Zagreb — For an Inland City Stay

Zagreb could suit travellers who want museums, historic neighbourhoods, cafés and time in Croatia’s capital. It may also fit naturally at the beginning or end of a journey involving Zagreb Airport.

We did not visit on this trip. When comparing accommodation, consider access to the centre, public transport and any onward connections. A central stay may be convenient for sightseeing, while confirmed parking becomes more important if you are continuing by car.

Choosing Your Accommodation in Croatia

Choose accommodation around how you like to travel. A short city stay may call for convenience and reception support, while several nights in a coastal village might suit an apartment with room to settle in.

Apartments and Self-Catering Stays

Apartments can work well for longer stays and road trips. A kitchen gives you flexibility for breakfast, picnic preparation and evenings when you prefer to eat in.

Check what “self-catering” includes. A basic kitchenette may be enough for simple meals but unsuitable for more substantial cooking. Laundry facilities can also be useful during a longer journey.

Guesthouses and Rooms in Private Homes

Guesthouses and privately rented rooms may offer more contact with local hosts. Our welcome in Zubovići became a memorable part of the trip, although the level of interaction varies between properties.

Look closely at the room arrangements. Bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor areas may be private or shared. Choose the setup that gives you the comfort and independence you want.

Hotels

Hotels may suit shorter visits or travellers who value reception support, housekeeping and breakfast options. Services differ, so confirm anything essential before booking.

For an early departure, check reception hours, checkout arrangements and breakfast times. A hotel can be convenient, but its location still needs to work for your sightseeing and transport.

Features Worth Prioritising

Depending on your trip, useful features might include:

  • Air conditioning for warmer weather.
  • Outdoor seating for spending time at the property.
  • Laundry access during a longer journey.
  • A lift or step-free access if stairs are difficult.
  • Enough living space for a stay of several nights.

A smaller place with the facilities you use can be a better fit than a larger property with extras you don’t need.

What to Check Before Booking

Once you have found somewhere suitable, check the details of the exact room or apartment you are booking. Photographs and facilities may represent several accommodation categories within one property.

Confirm What You Will Receive

  • Room photographs: Do they show your selected accommodation category?
  • Sea views: Are they guaranteed for your room or shown only in general property photographs?
  • Outdoor space: Is the balcony or terrace private or shared?
  • Facilities: Are the kitchen, bathroom and laundry arrangements clear?
  • Location: Does the listing identify the property precisely enough to check access?

Read Recent Reviews

Look for comments about:

  • Cleanliness and the condition of the accommodation.
  • Comfortable beds and effective air conditioning.
  • Road noise, nearby nightlife and sound between rooms.
  • Whether the listing accurately describes the property.
  • Helpful communication and straightforward check-in.

Reviews from a similar season can be especially useful. A peaceful spring visit may feel different from a stay during peak summer.

Check the Total Cost and Cancellation Terms

Before paying, confirm:

  • Whether cleaning, parking and applicable tourist taxes are included.
  • Any security deposit and how it will be returned.
  • Payment dates and accepted payment methods.
  • The cancellation deadline and refund conditions.

Compare the final price for your whole stay rather than the headline nightly rate.

Arrange Your Arrival

Confirm check-in times, key collection and who to contact if you are delayed. Tell your host if your arrival depends on a ferry or a long drive.

Save the address, contact number and check-in instructions offline. For properties with restricted vehicle access, ask your host what needs to be arranged before you arrive.

Finding the Right Base for Your Croatia Journey

Some of our favourite stays in Croatia were in places we could easily have passed by. Komarna gave us quiet waterfront evenings, Omiš offered a convenient mix of outings, and Zubovići was somewhere to slow down. Dubrovnik brought a different experience, with time to explore the historic streets we had looked forward to seeing.

Choose your bases around the holiday you want and the transport you will have. You might prefer one well-connected town or several stops along the coast. The right place is somewhere you will enjoy returning to at the end of the day.
